If you ask Rend Stephan, managing director at the Boston Consulting Group, simplicity is the name of the game. With a career spanning two decades, he’s transformed complicated corporate strategies into streamlined, anti-complex business models.

A Brief Introduction to Rend Stephan

Rend Stephan has built a global career out of a single quest: dismantle complexity in business. As a founding partner of several ventures, a managing director at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and the CEO of ClicData, he’s reshaped complex business strategies into anti-complex models. He’s a leader with a mindset that thrives on simplicity, believing that complex strategies are a barrier to ultimate performance. In 2022, he published the book Anti-Complex: The Leadership Mindset for Ultimate Performance, which details his anti-complex philosophy.

Even with talented leadership at the helm, business strategies frequently miss the mark. The reason? According to Rend Stephan, it’s needless complexity. He believes complexity is a pervasive issue that saps the vitality of an organization, hampering the accomplishments of adept leaders and their teams.

His book Anti-Complex: The Leadership Mindset for Ultimate Performance, gives business leaders a blueprint for adopting an anti-complex mindset and empowers them to become “complexity warriors.”

3 Highlights from Rend Stephan's Augment Class

  • On the Truth about Complexity: "We’ve been told that we live in a complex world, and we’ve accepted this as unavoidable. But here’s the truth — complexity absorbs energy and resources. And if energy is dedicated to managing complexity, then there is less energy for what really matters. Complexity is the main reason most companies and leaders do not fulfill their potential."
  • On the Incremental Paradox: "When we do incremental change, each improvement is generally warranted and justified. But the resulting outcome rapidly becomes complex and suboptimal. This is why it’s a paradox – the Incremental Paradox. We don’t stop and think: Are these ‘small changes’ going too far? The answer quite often is ‘yes’."
  • On Reframing the Problem: "Only when you have properly reframed the problem, you can then ask the magical question, “what-if?”, and explore genuine, insightful, and simple solutions. Reframing the problem forces you to be lucid, to confront and eliminate irrelevant complexities, in order to find simple and powerful insights. Train yourself, and your team, to do this. It may not be natural or easy at first. But by doing this, day-in and day-out, you will be able to unearth the simple, and bury the complex."
